How much does it cost to see a psychologist?
If the robbery was a work place incident then your work place's Worker's Compensation insurer will often pay for the costs of your psychological counselling.
Alternatively, if you are referred to a private psychologist by a GP (or psychiatrist) under what is called a “Mental Health Care Plan” referral, you will usually receive a Medicare rebate for up to 12 sessions per calendar year. Most psychologists charge above the Medicare rebate so that you will usually pay some gap fee.
If you consult a Clinical Psychologist you will receive a government Medicare rebate of $115.05 per visit (usually around 50-60 minutes). If you consult a general Psychologist you will receive Medicare rebate of $78.40 (These figures are accurate as at November 2008 and are usually adjusted annually).
In NSW, there is some free counselling available through the state government's Victims Services counselling scheme. Other states have similar schemes.
